Compendium For
Hello! We’re Stoked You’ve made it.
Now you are in The Nest there are a few things you’ll need to know to make the most of your stay!
wi-fi
The WIFI network is “Eagles Eyrie” The password is Skilantern3
parking
Please park in front of the roller door to the left of the main carport area for the house.
THE FIREPLACE
This slow combustion wood heater is the best way to get toasty warm. Due to our ready supply of firewood it is also a sustainable form of heating due to low emissions from this efficent little fire box. In cold seasons we will set it ready to go for your arrival. Follow these steps to get it going.
Just light the small square firelighter (Beige block under the kindliing at the front of the fire.)
Make sure the vent dial is open (spin it anti clockwise) and leave the door slightly ajar to get the air flowing in.
Once it is burning well, shut the door tight and add gradually larger peices of wood, Don’t overdo it or you will cook!
If it gets too hot, or to keep the fire going through the night wind the vent dial in clockwise. The less air, the slower the burn. If the vent is fully shut the fire might smother.
If you are not sure about wood fires and setting them
check out Ian’s full fire setting guide here.
Heating
During winter we will have our heating system running in the early mornings and late afternoons to get things warmed up.
You can then light the fire to keep it cosy or use the 2 column heaters to regulate the temperature when the fire is not on. The bathroom has underfloor heating on a timer.
THE BBQ
Please feel free to use the BBQ.
Turn on the gas bottle.
Turn the large dial on the right side to “start”
Push the red ignition button on the left side and listen for the burners lighting
For best results keep the lid closed to heat up and keep it closed when you are not checking your food.
When finished brush the hot plate down to clean it and turn the gas bottle off to avoid leaks.
Wind and snow
We are in the mountains and things can get a bit wild on the weather front. Strong winds often come in before a cold front.
Don’t leave any clothing or other items outside that could blow away. Do not go bush walking if the winds pick up as branches can come down.
If the snow starts falling the driveway may be inaccessible. You can drive out using low gears and slow speeds to avoid braking suddenly. Stick to the middle of the road.
If you are out and come back home to find the driveway covered in snow, all-wheel/four-wheel drive vehicles with solid chunky mud/snow tyres or new all-weather tyres should be able to drive in.
Just proceed as normal and do not spin your wheels at high revs.
Cars with old tyres or slick low profile tyres should not attempt the snow-covered driveway without chains.
In this case, you are best to park at the bottom and walk up the drive.
Conditions like this only occur a few times a season.
Firepit
We are in a high-risk bushfire zone so caution is required when lighting a fire outside.
You are welcome to use the firepit outside the apartment from the first of May to the end of October unless fire restrictions have been extended or it is dry and windy.
Outside of these periods check with us first before lighting the fire
Tea, Coffee and other stuff
A selection of tea and coffee and a few kitchen and bathroom basics is provided. Please let us know if you need any extras.
Rubbish, recycling & Cleaning
We separate our waste into 3 categories.
Vegetable scraps and non-meat food waste can be put into the small compost bin under the kitchen sink.
If you fill this please empty it into the white bucket with the lid next to the BBQ. Please ensure the lid is fitted back on the bucket.Paper, Cardboard, Cans, bottles and recyclable packaging go in the left-hand bin in the kitchen bin drawer,
if that is full empty it into the grey bin with flip lid next to the BBQ. We will take it from there. All other waste can go into the right side bin in the kitchen and be bagged up and transferred to the green “garbage’ bin near the laundry door.
Prior to Departure
Please wash all kitchenware and return to the cupboards, and load and start the dishwasher.
Remove all your personal items and remember to check for your charger packs, and any items placed in drawers.
Laundry
You are welcome to use our laundry, the door is just to the right of the BBQ.
This is also the resident canines (Iggy and Dexter’s) bedroom so please do not use it after 10pm or before 7am as they will be in bed.
Wildlife
There are plenty of critters in the bush, during your stay you may see wombats, possums, wallabies, deer, and eagles. During the Summer there are also Copperhead Snakes, these guys are venomous but also very timid, so keep an eye out where you step on the hot days. But don’t be worried, they are more scared of you!
entertainment
The TV is a Smart TV so you can connect t your favourite streaming services.
But we also have some other board games and puzzles in the main house, so just let us know if you need entertaining!
There are also plenty of puzzles and books available to borrow if you are having a day off the adventures.
